Catch+Release: a scrapbook (2019) – violin, cello, piano (w/ keys+bottle opener) (18′)
—————————–
Catch+Release is a collection of quickly shifting scraps, memories, and impulses which are connected simply by the physicality of gesture, focusing on the excitation of strings of differing materials and sizes with bows, hands, bottle openers, hammers, and dampers. In many instances, the ways in which notes are released takes precedence over how they are attacked– especially in the piano–leading to extremely precise and delicate interactions between the piano strings, the dampers, and the hands. In this way, releases become a type of attack, memories a type of action.
Catch+Release behaves as an aggregation of physicality with a short musical attention span; hyper-localized listening melds with large scale gestural listening. Disparate elements interchange briskly, motives present themselves and exit just as they entered, and each scrap becomes a small space for intense and focused physical exploration.
It’s not necessarily about fishing.
