————————–
outside(inside)out is a work that explores extremes of tone and timbre, movement of sound and gesture, physicality, shimmering colors, play, inclusion & exclusion, and ecstatic states. The two pairs of inward-facing Outsiders (the two string quartets) continually exchange material with the Insiders (the flute and clarinet)—looking for bits of growing connection—each group taking the lead at various junctures in the work, sound interchanging briskly across the various groups and players onstage. After initial separations, pure sounds (harmonics and various five- note collections) gradually marry themselves to complex sounds (noisy overpressure and bow crunches), coalescing in a final, exuberant & shimmering dance episode.
