My new POLYPHONOS commission The Blue Booby was premiered and given two subsequent performances in Seattle and Tacoma by The Esoterics (Eric Banks, cond.). I had the opportunity to have a four day residency in Seattle with the ensemble, coaching, speaking with audiences about my work, and meeting with all of the wonderful members of the ensemble.

As part of the program, I will be fulfilling two new 5 minute commissions for chorus: one free, the other specifically intended for high school voices. I will also be receiving mentorship from composer Timothy Takach during the composition and rehearsal process. Performances are slated for November 2017 at the Minnesota ACDA Conference, and March at McNally Smith College.

A whole group of artists from MN and beyond have all come together in support of its diverse communities through song, speech, and art. Conductor Ahmed Anazaldua will be leading a chorus to perform and premiere works which reflect the rich cultural diversity of the USA, including my new SSAA and handbell choir work O, Cupbearer a setting of a Rumi quatrain, sung in Farsi. I will also be performing as part of the initiative.

Two Performances of Four Glimpses of Desire Given at IC2017
Acclaimed tenor Jonathan Blalock and I performed selections from my cycle Four Glimpses of Desire at the 2017 Intimacy of Creativity Festival where I am a Composer Fellow.
Daniel Sabzghabaei selected as Composer Fellow for The Intimacy of Creativity Festival 2017
Daniel was selected out of a pool of 160 applicants to be a Composer Fellow for The Intimacy of Creativity‘s inaugural Contemporary Song Festival, coordinated by internationally acclaimed composer Bright Sheng. Daniel will be performing his song cycle Four Glimpses of Desire at the festival in Hong Kong, and will also be collaborating on performances of the work with on-the-rise tenor Jonathan Blalock, fresh off of premiering the title role in Mark Adamo’s Becoming Santa Claus at the Dallas Opera. Daniel will be in residence at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology: HKUST from February 26 – March 6.

A panel of four judges reviewed a strong and numerous pool of anonymously submitted scores to settle upon the winners of three separate awards: one national (U.S.) composer, one international composer, and one young composer under the age of 30. Daniel was selected in the National Composer category, and will receive a US$1,000 commission for a 5-minute new work that The Esoterics (Eric Banks, cond.) will premiere at the POLYPHONOS Concert in October of 2017 in Seattle, Washington.
